UK Big Cats - The Leopard (Panthera Pardus)
The Leopard Is one of the smaller big
cats, very similar to a Jaguar.
About 7ft (2.1m) in length of which 3ft is
the tail, average weight is 100lb (45kg).
The ground colour is usually a dark shade
of yellow and this is marked by black
rosettes on the flanks and back, the
centres of the rosettes being a darker
shade than the general ground colour.
There are considerable variations in the
spotting and ground colour and the
melantistic or black form known as the
Black Panther is quite common.
In captivity the Leopard has lived as long
as 23 years, but the life span in the wild
is far less normally around 12 - 15 years.
